Drogba is supposed to miss at a minimum some of the World Cup and the chances of Ivory Coast even making it out of the group stage in World Cup probabilities are now doubtful.

Drogba made 29 goals this season for Chelsea and Ivory Coast was thought to be a danger in Group G considering of his scoring capability. Ivory Coast kicks off play versus Portugal on June 15th and without Drogba’s scoring it appears unlikely they can win that competition. Friday wasn’t a great day for star players as England’s captain Rio Ferdinand was wounded in the course of training in Rustenburg, South Africa. US team striker Jozy Altidore sustained a sprained right ankle and his status is unknown and even Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar has been managing a back injury. A number of high profile players have already dropped out of the world cup. Other players who are wounded in addition to Drogba and out of the world cup include England’s David Beckham, Germany’s Michael Ballack and Ghana’s Michael Essien.

The FIFA World Cup will begin on June 11th and is supposed to play through July 11th. An African nation will be hosting the World Cup for the first time ever this year. South Africa trumped Morocco and Egypt for the privilege. The FIFA World Cup is held one time every four years and features 32 teams from different countries competing versus each other for the championship in football. This event has historically been dominated by Brazil, which holds a record five titles and is the only squad to have competed in every tournament. The current champion is Italy, which has won the championship four times total. The next World Cup will be held in 2014 in Brazil.
